Criminal record check in Brampton, online

Brampton’s warehouses and distribution centres near the 407 and 410, its trucking and logistics firms, and the offices and stores along Queen Street all ask new hires for a criminal record check, and in Brampton most people search for it as a Peel police record check. With MyCRC you can get a name-based criminal record check online instead: enter your name and date of birth for a search of the RCMP’s national database, confirm it’s you with a photo of your ID and a selfie, and download the PDF from your account in as little as 15 minutes. Springdale, Bramalea, Mount Pleasant or Heart Lake, it works the same.

Peel’s online-only route and the credit file

Brampton is policed by Peel Regional Police, which only provides record checks to people who live in Brampton or Mississauga, and only online. To prove who you are, Peel uses Equifax, which asks questions drawn from your credit information, so the police say you need a bank account and a credit history to apply. Peel stresses that this is not a credit check, but if you’re new to Canada, a student or simply don’t have much of a credit file, it may stop the online application before it starts.

What Peel charges Brampton residents

Peel’s criminal record check and its criminal record and judicial matters check cost $35 each, or nothing for volunteers with a letter from their agency. A vulnerable sector check is $35, plus $52 if fingerprints are needed, and the fingerprint fee is waived for volunteers with an agency letter. Peel also offers a broad record check for certain child and youth roles, requested by email. Every record check fee is non-refundable. Record suspension (pardon) checks are separate: they go by mail, with a $92 certified cheque or money order made out to the Region of Peel.

Brampton business licences

If your check is for a City of Brampton business licence, the city’s Business Licensing By-law sets the rule. It defines a criminal record as “a record of past crimes for which an individual has been convicted”, and for the licences that need one it asks for “a Criminal Record Search conducted by the Police Services in the area where the Applicant resides or from an approved provider of criminal records checks in Canada”. Check the requirements for your licence type with the city before you apply.

No credit file needed

MyCRC confirms your identity with your ID and a selfie rather than credit-history questions. That makes it a fit for students, newcomers and anyone without much credit history, and it costs $68.23 with tax included, from Bramalea, Springdale or Caledon.
