Criminal record check in Durham Region, online

Oshawa’s auto and logistics employers, the colleges and university in Oshawa, and the growing stretch of offices and shops through Whitby, Ajax and Pickering all ask new hires for a police record check. If yours is due before your start date, MyCRC can help: our name-based criminal record check is done entirely online, with your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP’s national database and your identity confirmed by a photo of your ID and a selfie. The PDF report is in your account in as little as 15 minutes, whether you live in Courtice, Bowmanville or Uxbridge.

Durham Regional Police’s online-only process

Durham Regional Police doesn’t take record check applications at a counter. Its page is blunt: “You cannot apply in person for a Police Record Check. It MUST be done online.” Online applications are open to residents of Durham Region who are over 18.

The standard application fee is $58.90. Volunteers and students get a reduced rate of $21.42, but only if they upload a letter from their organization; without the letter, the application is refunded and you have to apply again. A broad record check, for certain roles with children and youth, costs $84.75, and leaving out its required letter cancels the application with no refund.

How long Durham takes

Durham Regional Police says checks are currently taking about three weeks and are processed in order of submission, and there is no rush service. Results come back by electronic delivery, or by Canada Post if you don’t qualify for it.

ID and fingerprints

Durham asks for two pieces of ID showing your name and date of birth, one of them government-issued photo ID, and neither expired. Ontario health cards and SIN cards aren’t accepted. You fill in your own application; someone else can’t apply for you, and results are only released to you. If fingerprints are needed, the police email you, and an appointment at Regional Headquarters takes about 15 to 30 minutes.

Ontario’s three levels

As in the rest of Ontario, Durham offers a criminal record check, a criminal record and judicial matters check, and a vulnerable sector check. Ask the employer which level it wants before you pay, because choosing the wrong one means applying again.

Three weeks is a long time

If an offer depends on your check, three weeks in a queue can push a start date. Against a three-week wait and a $58.90 fee, MyCRC’s name-based check costs $68.23 with tax included and can be finished tonight, from Whitby, Ajax or Port Perry.
