Criminal record check in York Region, online
Markham’s tech campuses, Vaughan’s warehouses and distribution centres, and the offices and retailers of Richmond Hill, Newmarket and Aurora all ask new hires for a criminal record check. Across York Region, people search for it as a “York Region police check”, because York Regional Police serves every one of those towns. MyCRC lets you get a name-based check online instead: your name and date of birth are searched against the RCMP’s national database, an ID photo and a selfie confirm it’s you, and the report is a PDF in your account in as little as 15 minutes.
How York Regional Police handles record checks
York Regional Police describes its criminal record check as the level for “basic screening for employment, licensing or other general purposes where only criminal convictions are required”. You apply online with electronic identity verification through Equifax eIDVerifier, which the service says is not a credit check and doesn’t affect your credit score. In-person service is by appointment at headquarters, 47 Don Hillock Drive in Aurora.
A criminal record check costs $75 online, $92 in person, or $35 for students, and the service notes its fees can change. If fingerprints are needed, a separate $122 fee applies. Applicants under 18 who are volunteering or applying to a government agency can’t apply online and must attend in person.
How long it takes
York Regional Police aims to finish record checks within 10 to 15 business days, but says that because of high demand, processing is currently taking longer than expected, and longer again if you have to attend for fingerprints.
Vulnerable sector checks are for residents only
The higher level is different: York Regional Police only provides vulnerable sector checks to people who live in York Region, and its page says applicants must reside in the region. They cost $75 online, $81 in person, or $35 for volunteers. If you live in Toronto or Peel and work in Vaughan, your vulnerable sector check comes from your own police service.
When three weeks is too long
Fifteen business days is three working weeks, before any delay. MyCRC’s name-based check is $68.23 with tax included, less than York Regional Police’s $75 online fee, and it doesn’t sit in a 15-business-day queue, whether you live in Thornhill, Stouffville or King City.
