Criminal record check in Red Deer, online

Halfway between Calgary and Edmonton, Red Deer’s employers in oil and gas services, trades, health and education, and retail ask for a criminal record check as a matter of routine. MyCRC lets you do it without a trip to the detachment: a name-based criminal record check online, searching your name and date of birth against the RCMP’s national database and confirming your identity with an ID photo and a selfie. The report is a PDF in your account in as little as 15 minutes, whether you’re in Sylvan Lake, Blackfalds, Lacombe or Innisfail.

How Red Deer’s police checks work

Red Deer is policed by the RCMP, and the City of Red Deer runs the application. You can apply and pay through the City’s online form without creating an account, but the finished check must be picked up in person at the Red Deer RCMP detachment, 4602 51 Avenue. The detachment processes police checks Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Wednesdays until 6:30 p.m.

Fees depend on where you live: $65 for an employment check if you’re a Red Deer resident, $90 if you’re not, and $10 for volunteers. Vulnerable sector checks are only for Red Deer residents, at $65 for employment or $10 for volunteers. Fingerprints, when needed, are taken Tuesday to Thursday by appointment only, at 403-406-2309.

Two checks you can’t do online

The City lists two checks that need an in-person visit. A certified criminal record check is a fingerprint-based search of the RCMP’s national repository. A declaration of criminal records is the one that gives you a list of all the convictions on your record in CPIC. That second one matters, because a name-based check, from the police or from MyCRC, does not list your convictions: it confirms whether a record matches. Under the RCMP’s policy, convictions you declare can be confirmed without fingerprints.

No pickup required

Between an online form, a counter pickup during detachment hours and a $90 fee if you live in Sylvan Lake or Penhold, the police route takes some planning. MyCRC’s name-based check is $68.23 with tax included and lands in your account, so there’s no trip to 51 Avenue to collect it, from Sylvan Lake, Penhold or Lacombe.
