Criminal record check in Laval, online

Laval employers, from the shops and offices around Carrefour Laval and the Centropolis to warehouses and plants along Autoroute 440, ask for proof of a clean record before a new hire starts. MyCRC offers a simpler route, in English: a name-based criminal record check you order from your phone. Your name and date of birth are checked against the RCMP’s national database, your ID and a selfie confirm it’s you, and the report lands in your account as a PDF in as little as 15 minutes. It’s the same from Chomedey, Vimont, Fabreville, Auteuil or Sainte-Rose.

The Laval police certificate

The Service de police de Laval issues a document called the Certificat du Service de police de Laval. Its own notice explains that no law requires police to issue this kind of document, so each police organization sets its own conditions, and Laval’s are strict. It considers three things before issuing one:

  • no criminal record;
  • no trouble with the law in the last five years;
  • no arrest or imprisonment warrant in force for unpaid fines.

The notice adds three warnings. No certificate is issued to anyone under 18. The fee pays for the validation searches, not the outcome, so it’s charged whether the certificate is issued or refused. And if you only need a document showing you have no criminal record, the police refer you to an authorized agency that issues an “attestation de vérification de casier judiciaire”.

Not a vulnerable sector screening

The Laval police are also clear that their certificate is not an “absence d’empêchement”, the screening for people who will work with vulnerable people. That screening comes from the police service where you live, and the Sûreté du Québec describes it as a separate check for work with vulnerable clients.

Québec’s three kinds of check

Across the province, the Sûreté du Québec describes three kinds of check for individuals: one for work with vulnerable clients, one required by Québec laws and regulations for sectors such as paid passenger transport and security, and a civil criminal record check for purposes like pre-employment screening, immigration and work permits.

A name-based check from home

MyCRC’s check is a different document from the Laval certificate: a name-based search for criminal convictions in the RCMP’s national database, for $68.23 with tax included, ordered in English from Chomedey or Sainte-Rose.
