Criminal record check online in Nunavut
Employers across Nunavut, from the Government of Nunavut and hamlet offices to mines, airlines and northern stores, often ask for a criminal record check before you start. MyCRC gives you a way to get one without arranging a visit to the detachment: a name-based search of the RCMP’s national database using your name and date of birth, with your identity confirmed by a photo of your ID and a selfie, and the report in your account as a PDF in as little as 15 minutes. It works the same in Arviat, Baker Lake, Igloolik, Kugluktuk, Pangnirtung or Gjoa Haven.
The RCMP’s V Division
Nunavut is policed by the RCMP’s V Division, with its headquarters and the Iqaluit detachment together in the capital. The RCMP lists detachments in 25 communities: Arctic Bay, Arviat, Baker Lake, Cambridge Bay, Chesterfield Inlet, Clyde River, Coral Harbour, Gjoa Haven, Grise Fiord, Igloolik, Iqaluit, Kimmirut, Kinngait, Kugaaruk, Kugluktuk, Naujaat, Pangnirtung, Pond Inlet, Qikiqtarjuaq, Rankin Inlet, Resolute, Sanikiluaq, Sanirajak, Taloyoak and Whale Cove.
The RCMP’s Nunavut listing shows the same services at every community detachment: criminal record checks, fingerprints and vulnerable sector checks, along with general enquiries. All 25 list their hours as Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and each detachment has its own local phone number for emergencies, so note the one for your community from the RCMP’s listing.
Vulnerable sector checks and fingerprints
Because every Nunavut detachment lists both vulnerable sector checks and fingerprinting, you can usually do both at your home detachment. The RCMP says a vulnerable sector check is done by the police service where you live, and that fingerprints are taken by a local police service or an RCMP-accredited fingerprinting company; accredited companies don’t provide vulnerable sector checks. When fingerprints are taken, the RCMP charges a federal processing fee of $25 per check, collected at the detachment that takes them and waived for eligible volunteer work. Its stated turnaround is 3 business days or less with no possible match to a record, and up to 120 business days when there is one, so leave room before a start date.
Online, from home
A detachment visit has to fit weekday office hours. MyCRC’s name-based check can be started any evening from your phone for $68.23 with tax included, with no need to fit around a detachment’s weekday hours in Iqaluit or Resolute.
