Criminal record check in Surrey, online

Surrey employers, from distribution centres in Newton and Cloverdale to retail along King George Boulevard and offices in City Centre, ask for a criminal record check before a new hire starts, and so do landlords across the city. MyCRC lets you get a name-based check online: your name and date of birth are searched against the RCMP’s national database, an ID photo and a selfie confirm it’s you, and the report is a PDF in your account in as little as 15 minutes. It works the same from Fleetwood, Guildford, South Surrey or Whalley.

Police information checks from the Surrey Police Service

In BC, the police check is called a police information check, or PIC. The Surrey Police Service only provides one if you’re a Surrey resident; if you live elsewhere, its page sends you to the police office in your own community.

You fill in the PIC form at home or at the counter, then hand it in in person, either at the front counter of SPS headquarters, 14355 57th Avenue, or at any open community police office, where no appointment is needed. You bring two separate pieces of government-issued ID, one with a photo and one showing your Surrey address, and the names have to match. BC Care Cards, social insurance cards and Canadian citizenship cards aren’t accepted.

What it costs and how long it takes

A standard police information check from the Surrey Police Service costs $95.90. A vulnerable sector check, which includes fingerprinting, is $120.90, and a $25 federal fee may be added. A PIC needed for volunteering is free when you bring a current volunteer letter from the organization asking for it. The service says it can’t guarantee same-day service, that each application is different and that wait times vary.

Work with children or vulnerable adults in BC

If you’re applying to work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults, the organization may screen you through the province’s Criminal Records Review Program instead, and it will tell you how to start. See the BC page for how that works.

Skipping the counter

Handing in a form in person during counter hours, with no promise of same-day service, can take a morning. MyCRC’s check costs $68.23 with tax included, $27.67 less than Surrey’s $95.90 police fee, and there’s no form to hand in at 57th Avenue, whether you’re in Fleetwood, Cloverdale or a break room in Langley.

Questions about criminal record checks in Surrey

Can I get a refund?

You can get your money back if you did not finish every step. The steps are:

  • Take a photo of your ID

  • Agree to send your information to the police

If you stopped before the last step, email support@mycrc.ca and ask for a refund. You get all of your money back.

How much does it cost?
