Criminal record check online on Prince Edward Island

Island employers, from Charlottetown offices to seasonal tourism and fisheries jobs, often want a criminal record check before your first shift, and on PEI that can mean a drive to a detachment and an appointment. MyCRC lets you order a name-based criminal record check online instead: your name and date of birth are searched against the RCMP’s national database, an ID photo and a selfie confirm it’s you, and the report is a PDF in your account in as little as 15 minutes, whether you’re in Cornwall, Stratford, Alberton, O’Leary or Georgetown.

Charlottetown Police Services

Charlottetown Police Services, at 10 Kirkwood Drive, handles record checks differently depending on why you need one. For employment, it directs you to one of two local providers rather than processing the check itself. For volunteering, you visit the station during business hours with a photocopy of two pieces of government-issued identification, one of them photo ID. A SIN card isn’t accepted as identification, and for anyone under 18 a record check can only be done when the position is paid. Positions with vulnerable people, such as teachers, daycare staff and coaches, need a vulnerable sector check, which Charlottetown calls a Level 3 check.

RCMP detachments across the Island

Outside Charlottetown, the Prince Edward Island RCMP lists criminal record checks as a service at six detachments: Kings District in Montague, Stratford, Souris, East Prince in North Bedeque, West Prince in Rosebank, and Queens District in Cornwall. Fingerprinting works differently at each: Stratford, East Prince and West Prince ask you to call and book an appointment, Queens District fingerprints only on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 by appointment, and the Souris detachment doesn’t offer fingerprinting at all. Kings District in Montague lists fingerprinting during weekday hours.

If fingerprints are needed

Fingerprints come into it when a name-based search can’t confirm who you are, and for checks the RCMP calls certified. The RCMP adds a federal processing fee of $25 for each fingerprint-based check, collected by whoever takes your prints, on top of the local fee. It quotes 3 business days or less when there’s no possible match to a record, and up to 120 business days when there is a possible match, so on the Island it pays to book the appointment early.

Skipping the appointment

On an island where the right detachment may be a drive away and fingerprints run to a set weekly window, a name-based check you can finish from your phone saves the trip. MyCRC’s name-based check is $68.23 with tax included, with no detachment appointment and no wait for a Wednesday fingerprint window, whether you’re in Charlottetown or a farmhouse in Kensington.
